This is a task allocated to year one
students in December. Each student was asked to produce a series of inter-connecting
images based on the assigned theme ‘Sense of Place’. Again, as with previous
assignments, the task had no set criteria, was not graded, not directed to any
great degree, and was open to the students interpretation of what the term or
the theme encapsulates. A lengthy discussion about the possibilities of how to
conceptualize the theme, plus a few suggestions of approaches to take, artists
and photographers to look at, was the only imput from the tutor.
Many students develop a "sense of place"
through experience and knowledge of a particular physical location. A sense of place
emerges through knowledge of the history, or ‘sense’ of history, of an area. The idea that time is deeply embedded within
place is one of the dominant characteristics to the students work – each try to
visually ‘activate’the past - to reveal its memory, its history, its personal and
social history.
The work
was selected by a ‘jury’ of 2nd year students who made choices
of the work on a number of levels – firstly on aesthetic merits, secondly
the work which, for them, best translates the students statement and vocal
description of their subject. Presented here is a selection of the jury’s
favourites.
